Our Story

The Beginning

Jude, born in the remote unelectrified village of Mbem in the North West region of Cameroon, would later leave Mbem to Allat at the age of 15.

2001

Jude becomes a part of the Hohns, a NAB missionary family, serving in the Fulbe community of Allat, a village in the Adamawa region of Cameroon.

Blessed to live in a home powered by solar, and having the opportunity to watch TV, read under bright lights and have ice cream Jude develops the passion to bring the same opportunity to other children in Mbem

2003

Ludwig Tiechgraber, a Canadian civil engineer and family friend to the Hohns, visits Allat to carry out some construction works. After interacting with the locals during his visit, Ludwig is inspired to provide a better lighting alternative to their kerosene lamps.

2005

Jude and Ludwig meet for the first time and realize that their dreams of helping the community are very aligned.

Wireless Light & Power
(WL&P)

2006

Jude and Ludwig file for an NGO, called Wireless Light & Power (WL&P), having a
mission to replace kerosene lamps with better, cleaner alternatives.

Light Pack Rental

2006 – 2008

WL&P launches the manufacturing and rental of a portable, rechargeable Lamp called The Light Pack. This was locally manufactured from PVC pipes.

Solar Charging Stations

2006 – 2008

REI (formerly WL&P) sets up its first solar charging station in the village of Allat, in the Adamawa region of Cameroon, with the purpose of renting and recharging the Light Pack.

Power Pack Rental

REI (formerly WL&P) introduces the Power Pack, a portable, rechargeable battery pack, capable of powering AC loads such as TVs, sound systems, cell phones and small power tools.

Major Restructuring

2010

Affected by the global financial crises,
WL&P shuts down, while REI Cameroon is created

First Mini-grid

2010

REI Cameroon launches its first Mini-grid, in the village of Allat, powering 6 homes, equipped with lights and TVs.

2011-2014

Jude and Angela incorporates REI Cameroon and sets up additional pilot mini-grids in 8 villages across 2 regions of Cameroon (Adamawa and North West) powering homes, businesses and institutions.

Market Fit

2014

With data from several pilots, REI established a product-market-fit and focused on growth and expansion.

Growth

2024

REI strengthened its corporate capacity, stream-lined its processes and operations and enhanced its team capacity.

2025

REI Cameroon focuses on scaling across Cameroon and other new markets in Africa.
